Balam Project is a story of true collaboration across the supply chain. It started as a way for a farmer to sell more coffee to his buyer after he had no more coffee from his farm to sell.

In 2005 Fredy Morales (farmer) and his customer Tom Owen (Sweet Maria’s) needed more coffee. So they agreed to start the Balam Project to reach out to Fredy’s neighbours and support the area to produce good coffee. Fredy worked with his neighbors and taught them the details particular to specialty coffee from seed to cup. Fredy met Maria because they are neighbours. Luis, Maria’s son helps her manage the farm which is located in La Libertad, Huehuetenango.
